Lions Make Big Coaching Moves After Losing Both Coordinators

The Detroit Lions have firmly established themselves as one of the NFL’s elite teams under head coach Dan Campbell. After an incredible 15-2 regular season that secured them the NFC’s No. 1 seed, their playoff journey was cut short with a 45-31 loss to the Washington Commanders in the Divisional Round.

As if that disappointment wasn’t enough, the Lions also saw both of their top coordinators depart for head coaching opportunities. Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson took over the Chicago Bears, while defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn landed the top job with the New York Jets.

To keep their momentum going, the Lions wasted no time finalizing their 2025 coaching staff, making their announcements on social media. John Morton has been named the new offensive coordinator, replacing Johnson, while Kelvin Sheppard steps into Glenn’s former role as defensive coordinator.

Morton has extensive coaching experience, having worked in various roles across the NFL, while Sheppard, a former player, has been an integral part of Detroit’s staff since 2021, previously serving as the linebackers coach.

Along with these major hires, the Lions introduced several other new faces to the coaching staff:

Tashard Choice (Running Backs Coach)

Caleb Collins (Defensive Assistant)

Bruce Gradkowski (Offensive Assistant)

August Mangin (Defensive Assistant)

Justin Mesa (Offensive Quality Control)

Tyler Roehl (Tight Ends Coach)

Kacy Rodgers (Run Game Coordinator/Defensive Line Coach)

David Shaw (Pass Game Coordinator)

Marques Tuiasosopo (Offensive Assistant)

With these changes in place, the Lions aim to build on their recent success and continue their push for a Super Bowl run in 2025.
