Lions Make Big Move, Sign Lockdown Cornerback to Strengthen Defense

Big news for the Detroit Lions—veteran cornerback D.J. Reed is joining the team on a three-year, $48 million contract, with $32 million fully guaranteed. After spending 2024 with the New York Jets, Reed is ready for a fresh start in Detroit. The 7-year NFL vet has also had stints with the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks.

Reed had a solid season with the Jets in 2024, playing 14 games, defending 11 passes, and racking up 64 tackles. He’s shown he’s a reliable defender since entering the league as a fifth-round pick in 2018, and his consistency paid off with this hefty contract from the Lions. Over his career, he’s played in 101 games, with 70 starts, but despite strong stats, he’s still waiting for that Pro Bowl or All-Pro recognition.

Now, Reed’s looking to help bolster Detroit’s defense.
