Lions Exploring Wide Receiver Options in NFL Draft, Eyeing Different Skill Sets
The Detroit Lions are looking to add depth at wide receiver, and two intriguing prospects—Illinois’ Pat Bryant and Oregon’s Tez Johnson—could fit the bill in very different ways.
Bryant, a 6-foot-3, 208-pound physical receiver, could provide the size and contested-catch ability Detroit relied on from Tim Patrick and Allen Robinson last season. With both veterans potentially departing in free agency, Bryant could be a mid-to-late-round target to keep that element in the offense. Known for his physicality and willingness to block, he fits right into Detroit’s “No block, no rock” mentality.
On the other hand, Johnson is a speedy, undersized playmaker at 5-foot-9, 156 pounds, who thrived at Oregon after transferring from Troy. He’s a dynamic deep threat with return ability, though his fit in Detroit is less clear with All-Pro returner Kalif Raymond already in place. Still, Johnson’s connection with Cooper Kupp and experience learning from top-tier talent could make him a sleeper prospect.
With new offensive coordinator John Morton having worked with some of Johnson’s Oregon teammates in Denver last year, there’s a level of familiarity that could play into Detroit’s draft strategy. Whether the Lions prioritize size or speed, they have options to upgrade their receiving corps.
