Lions’ Next Fan Favorite? 2025 Camp Darling Watch

As the Detroit Lions prepare to open training camp in Allen Park, one of the most exciting annual storylines is taking shape: Who will become this year’s camp darling?

Every summer, an under-the-radar player captures the hearts of fans and coaches alike — flashing big-play potential, soaking up reps with infectious energy, and making an undeniable case for a roster spot. In 2023, it was cornerback Starling Thomas V. In 2024, undrafted tight end Jalen Watson became the talk of camp. Now, in 2025, the field is wide open.

Here are the early favorites to emerge as the Lions’ next fan favorite at training camp:

1. WR Kaleb Redd (Rookie, 6th Round – Southern Miss)

Redd arrived in Detroit with little fanfare, but those who watched him at OTAs came away impressed with his suddenness off the line and his sticky hands. With Jameson Williams expected to take on a larger role and Josh Reynolds departing in free agency, Redd could find himself with valuable second-team reps — and possibly a preseason spotlight.

> “He doesn’t drop anything,” said WR coach Antwaan Randle El. “And the kid competes.”

2. EDGE Tyrese Battle (UDFA – Temple)

If there’s one thing that makes a training camp darling, it’s motor. And Battle has that in spades. The undrafted rookie is already being praised for his relentless effort in drills and his ability to bend off the edge. While he’s a longshot to make the 53-man roster, a strong camp and preseason could land him a spot on the practice squad — or more.

3. RB Jermar Jefferson (2021 Draft Pick, Returning)

After spending time on and off the roster the past few seasons, Jefferson enters camp with something to prove. He’s fully healthy, trimmed down, and running with a renewed sense of urgency. In a crowded backfield, don’t be surprised if Jefferson makes noise — especially in preseason games where his burst and vision can shine.

4. CB Donovan Westfield (Rookie, 5th Round – Oregon State)

Quietly, Westfield has been one of the more consistent defensive backs through rookie minicamp and OTAs. With great ball instincts and solid technique, he’s already turning heads in the DB room. His physical playstyle and ability to line up in the slot could give him a real chance to carve out a role.

The Underdog Factor

Training camp darlings aren’t always the most talented — they’re often the most surprising. Whether it’s a late-round pick, a returning fringe player, or an undrafted longshot, the Lions’ fan base loves an underdog. With Dan Campbell at the helm, gritty, hard-nosed performers tend to rise in the pecking order.

“We love guys who outwork the guy in front of them,” Campbell said during media availability. “This camp, we’ll see who really wants it.”

Final Word

As Lions fans gear up for the return of football, all eyes will be on those surprise names making noise in practice. The 2025 camp darling may not be a household name now — but give it a few weeks. By the end of August, he just might be the newest fan favorite in Detroit.

Let the watch begin.
