Lions’ Offensive Spending: A Closer Look at Detroit’s Cap Strategy

The Detroit Lions are making major financial commitments to their offense in 2025, ranking seventh in the NFL with $148.7 million allocated to that side of the ball. With a franchise quarterback, a dominant offensive line, and top-tier skill players, it’s no surprise they’re investing heavily in keeping their unit among the league’s elite.

Jared Goff’s cap hit is a manageable $32.6 million this season, but it balloons to nearly $70 million in 2026—likely prompting a restructure. The Lions are also among the league’s biggest spenders at running back and wide receiver, with David Montgomery, Jahmyr Gibbs, and Amon-Ra St. Brown leading the way. Meanwhile, their bargain approach at tight end has paid off, with Sam LaPorta providing Pro Bowl production at a fraction of the cost.

The biggest financial challenge ahead? Their offensive line. While currently ranked seventh in spending, that number jumps to third in 2026 as Penei Sewell’s contract skyrockets. Decisions will have to be made, whether through restructures, draft investments, or potential roster moves.
