Lions on the Clock: Big Call Coming for Jameson Williams

The Detroit Lions have already handled most of their offseason business, locking down key players from last year’s squad. But they’ve still got a few decisions left to make—especially when it comes to some remaining free agents and two former first-round picks.

By May 1, the team has to decide whether to pick up the fifth-year options on Aidan Hutchinson and Jameson Williams. No surprise—Hutchinson’s a priority, and while there’s no news yet on a contract extension, the Lions clearly want to keep him long-term.

The more interesting situation? Jameson Williams. The wide receiver finally had a breakout year in 2024, putting up 58 catches, over 1,000 yards, and seven touchdowns in 15 games. If Detroit picks up his fifth-year option, he’d be locked in for 2026 at around $15.5 million.

GM Brad Holmes recently said the team will “likely” pick up that option. He added that Williams still has more to show, and keeping him makes sense. That lines up with what ESPN’s Eric Woodyard reported, too.

With a few weeks left before the deadline, the Lions don’t have to rush. Picking up the option doesn’t stop them from working out a longer deal later—it just gives them more time to evaluate Williams. He’s shown flashes of greatness, but his first few years were rocky with injuries and suspensions.

So the question now is: do the Lions believe Williams is their guy for the long haul? We’ll find out soon enough.
