Lions Predicted to Sign Khalil Mack Amid Offseason Defensive Overhaul

Detroit aims to strengthen its defense with a proven veteran as they look to make a Super Bowl push in 2025.

As the Detroit Lions gear up for a crucial offseason, one name has surfaced as a potential game-changer for their defense: Khalil Mack. The former All-Pro edge rusher has been linked to the Lions in recent predictions, with experts speculating that Detroit might make a move to sign the 33-year-old if he opts to continue playing instead of retiring. This potential acquisition could significantly bolster the Lions’ pass rush and defensive depth for the upcoming season.

Khalil Mack’s Career: A Storied Past with Room for More

Mack’s career has been nothing short of impressive, but his recent performance has raised questions about his longevity. After an explosive 2023 season where he recorded 17 sacks, Mack’s numbers dipped in 2024, finishing with just six sacks. Despite this drop-off, his flashes of brilliance still demonstrate that he has plenty left in the tank. A notable two-sack performance against the Texans earlier in the season showed that Mack’s elite pass-rushing abilities are still very much intact.

Brad Berreman of SideLion Report pointed out that Mack continues to be effective in key defensive metrics. Pro Football Focus ranks him among the top 30 in quarterback pressures and the top 25 in pass rush win rate. These statistics highlight that even in the twilight of his career, Mack can still contribute significantly to a team in need of a pass-rush boost.

Could Mack Be the Missing Piece for the Lions?

For the Lions, adding Mack to their defensive line would provide both experience and a much-needed spark. With Aidan Hutchinson already emerging as one of the league’s top young pass rushers, the addition of Mack could create a dominant duo capable of wreaking havoc on opposing quarterbacks.

Mack’s age, combined with his recent performance dip, suggests that he could be available for a short-term deal. This would give the Lions the flexibility to assess his performance and make adjustments if necessary. However, with the 2025 season in sight, a brief contract could be the perfect opportunity for Mack to prove that he can still perform at a high level and help push the Lions toward a deeper playoff run.

Mack’s Leadership Could Strengthen the Lions’ Defense

Aside from his on-field contributions, Mack would bring valuable leadership to a Detroit defense on the rise. Adding a proven veteran like him to the locker room could help accelerate the development of the younger players, particularly in high-pressure situations. As the Lions focus on improving their defense and building for the future, Mack’s experience would be a welcome addition.

While the decision ultimately lies with Mack—whether he chooses to continue his career or retire—the Lions would be wise to consider signing him if he decides to play another year. His presence on the field and in the locker room could be a crucial factor in Detroit’s pursuit of greater success in 2025.

As the offseason progresses, all eyes will be on whether the Lions make a move for Mack. If they do, it could prove to be one of the most impactful signings of the year, strengthening a defense poised to compete at the highest level.
