Lions Prepare for Possible Alex Anzalone Absence by Hosting Veteran LB Kyzir White

The Detroit Lions are moving proactively as contract uncertainty looms over linebacker Alex Anzalone’s status for the start of the 2025 season. With talks reportedly stalled and Anzalone expressing public frustration, the team welcomed veteran linebacker Kyzir White for a visit—signaling that the front office is preparing for all scenarios.

White, 29, brings experience, leadership, and durability—three traits Detroit may urgently need. He’s coming off a solid season with the Arizona Cardinals, where he started all 17 games and tallied 60 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and an interception. While he may be older than most players on Detroit’s roster, White’s reliability and playmaking instincts make him one of the top remaining free agents on the market.

If signed, White would likely slot into a rotational role with the potential to start alongside young standout Jack Campbell. With Derrick Barnes and Malcolm Rodriguez already on the depth chart, the addition of White would give Detroit enviable flexibility at the linebacker position—especially if Anzalone’s holdout drags on.

Anzalone, a team captain and veteran presence, has made it clear he wants to remain in Detroit but voiced disappointment that contract negotiations haven’t progressed as he expected. His leadership and knowledge of the defensive scheme are invaluable, but with just weeks until the season begins, the Lions aren’t taking chances.

Adding White would mirror Detroit’s savvy offseason signings like Graham Glasgow and Trystan Colon, who helped stabilize the offensive line following the retirements and departures of key veterans. White’s projected market value sits around $5.7 million, a price Detroit can afford comfortably, given the team has nearly $48 million in cap space entering training camp.

Even if Anzalone returns before Week 1, signing White could prove to be a smart depth move, giving defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn another veteran to rotate in. And with the Lions hoping to build on last season’s NFC Championship run, having a full arsenal of proven defenders may be just what they need to get over the hump.

As the Lions prepare for their preseason opener next Thursday, don’t be surprised if Kyzir White finds himself wearing Honolulu Blue.
