Lions Projected to Trade Up for ‘Poor Man’s Aidan Hutchinson’ in NFL Draft

Detroit Eyes More Defensive Help in Bold Draft Strategy

The Detroit Lions are expected to bolster their pass rush this offseason, and one analyst predicts they’ll do so by making a draft-day trade. With Aidan Hutchinson returning from injury, Detroit could look to add another high-motor edge rusher to complement their star defender.

A Strategic Move to Trade Back

Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine has outlined a scenario in which the Lions trade down from their No. 28 pick to acquire additional draft capital. Under his proposed trade, Detroit would send its first-round pick along with the No. 246 selection to the New England Patriots in exchange for the No. 38 and No. 69 overall picks.

This move would allow the Lions to remain in prime position to add defensive talent while gaining an extra valuable pick in the process.

Jack Sawyer: The Next Piece of Detroit’s Defense?

In Ballentine’s mock draft, the Lions would use their newly acquired second-round pick to land Ohio State edge rusher Jack Sawyer. Though not projected as an elite pass-rushing prospect, Sawyer has drawn comparisons to Hutchinson for his physicality, relentless motor, and toughness.

“By trading down, I kept the Lions in a position to still add some type of help off the edge,” Ballentine wrote. “That’s exactly what Jack Sawyer would do for them. He looks like a poor man’s version of Aidan Hutchinson but Sawyer is the type of player the Lions look for each draft. He’s tough, plays physical and has a high motor.”

While Sawyer may lack the ideal quickness and bend for an elite pass-rusher, his work ethic and ability to take on blockers make him a compelling addition to Detroit’s defensive front. Pairing him with Hutchinson, Josh Paschal, and potentially Za’Darius Smith would give the Lions a well-rounded edge attack.

Strengthening the Defensive Line Further

With the additional third-round pick obtained from New England, Ballentine predicts the Lions will select Texas A&M defensive lineman Shemar Turner.

“After the Combine and Pro Days, I think Turner will solidify himself as a top-75 pick,” Ballentine wrote. “He’s got the desired size (6’4″ and 300 pounds) and versatility to contribute right away.”

Turner’s combination of lateral movement and explosiveness could make him a strong fit in Detroit’s defensive rotation, especially if the Lions are looking for a replacement for Levi Onwuzurike.

Coaching Changes Set the Stage for Success

The Lions have already begun revamping their defensive front, starting with the addition of Kacy Rodgers as their new defensive line coach. Rodgers, who previously helped Tampa Bay rank among the top teams in sacks, is expected to bring a disciplined and aggressive approach to Detroit’s unit.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell expressed confidence in Rodgers, calling him a perfect fit for the staff.

“I’ve seen him coach. I know what he’s like. I know what the D-line is like with him coaching them,” Campbell said at the NFL Combine. “I think he’s going to be great for our D-line.”

With a strong coaching foundation and a potential trade-down strategy in play, the Lions could be positioning themselves for another step forward in their defensive evolution. If Sawyer and Turner become part of their draft class, Detroit’s front seven could look even more formidable in 2025.
