Lions Propose Three Rule Changes for 2025 Season
As the NFL owners’ meetings approach at the end of the month, the Detroit Lions are again making their presence felt with three proposed rule changes for the 2025 season. Here’s a breakdown of the new proposals:
Eliminate Automatic First Downs on Penalties: The Lions want to remove the automatic first down that comes with defensive holding and illegal contact penalties. These minor infractions often have significant consequences, especially on third-and-long situations.
Change Playoff Seeding: The Lions are advocating for a shift in how playoff teams are seeded. The proposal would allow wild card teams with a better record than division winners to secure a higher seed. This comes after the 2024 NFC North season, where the Lions and Vikings finished with similar records, but the division winner ended up facing a road playoff game despite having a superior record overall.
IR Players Not Counting Against Roster Limit: The Lions also propose that players placed on IR before the cutdown date should not count against the team’s 90-man roster limit, as they are ineligible to return.
These proposals aim to improve fairness and roster flexibility for teams, and the owners will vote on them in the upcoming meetings.
