Could Gardner Minshew Be the Perfect Backup for Jared Goff?
The Detroit Lions may have a prime opportunity to upgrade their quarterback depth, with veteran Gardner Minshew set to hit the open market.
Minshew, who is being released by the Las Vegas Raiders, has been labeled an “ideal” backup option for Jared Goff by SideLion Report’s Brad Berreman. While Hendon Hooker is currently the Lions’ primary backup, there are questions about whether he’s ready to step in if needed. Minshew, on the other hand, brings plenty of experience, having played for multiple teams, including the Colts, Jaguars, and Eagles.
In 2024, Minshew started nine games for the Raiders, completing over 66% of his passes with nine touchdowns and ten interceptions. His history of stepping in and keeping offenses afloat makes him an appealing option for Detroit, especially with Goff’s durability always a concern.
The Lions aren’t the only team that could be interested in Minshew, though. Some analysts believe the Colts could try to bring him back, while other QB-needy teams may also see him as a solid insurance policy. If the Lions want a proven veteran behind Goff, Minshew could be a smart investment.
