Lions QB Impresses No One, Immediately Gets Promoted to Benchwarmer

Lions Shake Things Up at QB After Ugly Preseason Debut

The Detroit Lions are already switching things up on offense heading into their second preseason game against the Falcons — and it’s not hard to see why.

After getting steamrolled 34-7 by the Chargers in the Hall of Fame Game, head coach Dan Campbell is benching veteran QB Kyle Allen and handing the reins to Hendon Hooker for the next outing. Translation: Allen’s rough night just cost him the starting gig, at least for now.

And yeah, it was that bad. Allen went 9-of-14 with just 91 yards — and tossed two picks — against a bunch of Chargers backups. Not exactly how you win a job. This is also Allen’s fifth team in five years, so “journeyman” might be putting it kindly at this point.

With Jared Goff likely riding the preseason pine, it’s now Hooker vs. Allen for the QB2 spot over the next few weeks. Allen still has a shot to bounce back, but time (and patience) is running short. If he wants to stick around in Detroit, he’ll need to bring a lot more to the table than just a clipboard.
