Lions’ Quiet Signing Just Earned Major National Recognition

The Detroit Lions may have kept a relatively low profile during the 2026 offseason, but one of their key additions is already earning national recognition.
Offensive lineman Cade Mays was recently named to Sports Illustrated’s Top 50 free-agent signings list, coming in at No. 37. While Detroit didn’t make a flurry of headline-grabbing moves, this signing stood out for addressing a critical need on the roster.
Following the departure of veteran Graham Glasgow, the Lions were left searching for stability at center. Mays, formerly of the Carolina Panthers, was brought in to fill that gap—and early signs suggest the team views him as a foundational piece.
Detroit secured Mays on a three-year, $25 million deal, including $14 million guaranteed, signaling confidence in his ability to anchor the offensive line.
Head coach Dan Campbell has already voiced strong support for the move, emphasizing the versatility and reliability Mays brings. According to Campbell, the new center has the tools to keep the pocket clean, support both zone and gap running schemes, and provide the kind of consistency the offense lacked at times last season.
The Lions experimented with younger options, including rookie Tate Ratledge, but ultimately leaned on experience. Now, with Mays in place, Detroit believes it has raised the floor of its offensive line—and possibly unlocked more balance on offense.
Still, the work isn’t finished.
With the NFL Draft approaching, many expect the Lions to continue building in the trenches, potentially targeting another tackle to strengthen depth and competition.
Detroit’s offseason may not have been flashy—but it’s becoming clear there’s a calculated plan behind every move.
