Lions Receive Major Boost as D.J. Reed and Marcus Davenport Return to Practice Ahead of Week 11

Detroit’s defense inches closer to full strength as key starters make long-awaited returns to the field.

Defensive Reinforcements Arrive at a Crucial Time

The Detroit Lions may soon be fielding one of their strongest defensive lineups of the season, as cornerback D.J. Reed and defensive end Marcus Davenport officially returned to practice on Wednesday. Both players had their 21-day activation windows opened, signaling that the team is preparing for their eventual return to the active roster.

Reed, who has been sidelined since suffering a hamstring injury in Week 4 against the Cleveland Browns, has been targeting an early December comeback. His return to practice aligns perfectly with that timeline.

“I’m a gamer, so I’m ready,” Reed said on Wednesday. “But that’s not my call. Obviously, they’re gonna be smart about it. If you ask me, I’m ready to play.”

Davenport, meanwhile, has been out since Week 2 after sustaining a chest injury against the Chicago Bears. The veteran pass rusher expressed his excitement to be back on the field, saying, “It’s great to finally be back.”

Depth and Momentum for Detroit’s Defense

Even without Reed and Davenport, Detroit’s defense has remained resilient. In their absence, Amik Robertson has filled in admirably at cornerback, while Tyler Lacy has seen increased snaps on the defensive line, particularly in early-down situations.

Now, with both starters working their way back, the Lions’ defensive unit could soon become one of the deepest in the NFC. Head coach Dan Campbell previously noted that Reed’s recovery was on track, while being less specific about Davenport’s return timeline—but both players’ participation this week marks a positive turning point.

Their presence would be timely, as Detroit prepares to face a high-powered Philadelphia Eagles offense led by Jalen Hurts and A.J. Brown in Week 11.

Other Injury Updates

While the return of Reed and Davenport is a major boost, the Lions are still managing several injuries across the roster. Seven players missed Wednesday’s practice, including Penei Sewell (ankle), Sione Vaki (ankle), Sam LaPorta (back), Brock Wright (ankle), Aidan Hutchinson (elbow), Terrion Arnold (concussion), and Kerby Joseph (knee).

Hutchinson, however, reassured fans that he is “not at all” concerned about his availability for Sunday’s matchup. Sewell, who briefly exited last week’s win over Washington, also finished that game and is expected to play.

Among limited participants were Reed, Davenport, Jacob Saylors (back), Taylor Decker (shoulder), Graham Glasgow (back), Miles Frazier (knee), Josh Paschal (back), and Pat O’Connor (knee). Linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez (knee) was a full participant, trending toward making his season debut.

Eyes on Philadelphia

With the Eagles up next on Sunday night, the Lions’ defensive resurgence couldn’t come at a better moment. If Reed and Davenport continue to progress through practice, Detroit’s defense could soon be back to full strength—ready to prove once again why they are one of the NFC’s toughest units.
