Lions Return to Hall of Fame Game for First Time Since 1991

The Detroit Lions are taking center stage once again—this time, in Canton.

For the first time in over three decades, the Lions will kick off the NFL’s preseason as they take on Jim Harbaugh’s Los Angeles Chargers in the 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame Game. Set for Thursday, July 31, the game will air live at 8 p.m. on NBC from Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.

This marks Detroit’s first appearance in the annual preseason opener since 1991. It also happens to be the first time the Chargers have played in the event since the mid-’90s. Both franchises enter the season with Super Bowl aspirations, which makes this matchup more than just a ceremonial kickoff—it’s a preview of two heavyweight hopefuls.

“This game features two teams that can be considered legitimate contenders to reach Super Bowl LX,” said Jim Porter, president of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. “For them to face each other right out of the gate in Canton, Ohio, should create a dynamic opening to another spectacular NFL season.”

The Hall of Fame Game often includes teams with ties to the new inductees. This year, one of the headliners is Antonio Gates, the legendary tight end who spent his entire career with the Chargers and grew up in Detroit.

It’s another national spotlight for a Lions team that has gone from underdog to must-watch in just a few short years.
