Detroit Lions fans worried about the team’s pass rush depth might be overlooking a hidden gem: rookie defensive end Ahmed Hassanein.
Selected in the sixth round out of Boise State, Hassanein has quietly impressed with his physical tools and relentless work ethic. Recently, a viral video shared by The Detroit Times showed Hassanein bench pressing over 400 pounds — a feat that highlights his dedication to getting NFL-ready.

Bench press numbers don’t guarantee on-field success, but Hassanein’s commitment in the weight room aligns perfectly with the Lions’ culture under GM Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell, who prioritize effort and determination.
Since arriving in Detroit, Hassanein has attacked rookie minicamp and OTAs with enthusiasm. As training camp approaches, new defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers praised the young pass rusher’s attitude and ability to overcome challenges — including learning both English and the complexities of NFL terminology.
> “He’s an impressive young man,” Rodgers said. “It’s hard enough learning English, but then football terms like stunt, trap, and drop? He works hard, asks good questions, and brings great energy.”
Rodgers added that Hassanein’s eagerness to learn has been clear from day one, and his strong preparation could make him a factor sooner than expected.
If Hassanein continues to match his physical readiness with mental growth in the playbook, he could emerge as a surprise contributor to Detroit’s defensive line rotation in 2025 — giving the Lions’ pass rush a needed boost from an unexpected source.
