Can DaRon Gilbert Earn a Spot on the Lions’ 2025 Roster?
DaRon Gilbert’s road to the NFL has been anything but easy. The Detroit native and former safety made the switch to linebacker in college, went undrafted, and then battled through injuries in his first year with the Lions. But despite the setbacks, his versatility and determination have kept him in the mix for a roster spot in 2025.
Gilbert originally signed with Detroit as an undrafted free agent and impressed in the preseason, showing strong instincts against the run and solid coverage skills from his background as a defensive back. Unfortunately, an injury led to his release, but the Lions saw enough potential to bring him back to the practice squad in December and sign him to a reserve/futures deal for 2025.
Now, with another offseason ahead, Gilbert will need to prove he belongs. His biggest challenges? Adding bulk to his 218-pound frame, staying healthy, and standing out in a crowded linebacker room. His primary competition will be fellow Michiganders Anthony Pittman and Trevor Nowaske, both known for their special teams value. But Gilbert’s ability to drop into coverage could give him an edge.
If he can improve his man-to-man skills and showcase his versatility in training camp, Gilbert has a real shot at making the 53-man roster. Will the hometown kid secure a spot with his childhood team? Time will tell.
