Lions Rumored to Open 2025 Season vs. Vikings in NFC North Showdown

The Detroit Lions may not be kicking off the 2025 NFL season against the Eagles like Amon-Ra St. Brown had hoped, but that doesn’t mean they’re being left out of the spotlight. While the league hasn’t officially announced Detroit’s Week 1 opponent, rumors are swirling that it could be a big-time division matchup.

According to a social media post from The Purple Persuasion, the Lions are expected to open the season against the Minnesota Vikings—possibly even in primetime. If true, this would be a fitting sequel to their high-stakes Week 18 showdown last season when the Lions crushed the Vikings 31-9 to lock up their second straight NFC North title and the No. 1 seed in the NFC.

The Vikings will look a lot different this time around, especially on offense. Former Michigan QB J.J. McCarthy is expected to be under center after missing his rookie season due to injury, and the O-line has been rebuilt. The Lions, meanwhile, are returning much of the same core but will be healthier to start the year.

It’s not quite the headline matchup against the defending NFC champs, but if Lions-Vikings is indeed on tap for Week 1, it’s a solid way to kick off the road to a third straight division crown.
