Report: Broncos Senior Personnel Executive David Shaw to Join Lions as Pass Game Coordinator
In a major move for the Detroit Lions, reports have confirmed that David Shaw, the Broncos’ senior personnel executive, has agreed to a multi-year deal to become the Lions’ new passing game coordinator. This hiring comes just days after former Broncos pass game coordinator John Morton was named the Lions’ offensive coordinator. Shaw’s addition further bolsters Dan Campbell’s revamped coaching staff as the Lions continue to refine their offensive strategies heading into the 2025-26 season.
Shaw, 52, brings with him a wealth of experience both at the collegiate and NFL levels. Known for his time as Stanford’s head coach, Shaw has a well-regarded football mind and has previously worked as an offensive coordinator under Jim Harbaugh. He spent several years with Harbaugh, first at the University of San Diego and later at Stanford, before moving to the NFL. Shaw also has previous stints with teams such as the Philadelphia Eagles, Oakland Raiders, and Baltimore Ravens, making him a coach with significant experience in both college and professional football.
This is a notable acquisition for the Lions, especially after losing former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to the Bears. Shaw’s role will be crucial in maintaining the Lions’ passing attack as the team moves forward under new leadership.
Before joining the Broncos in 2024, Shaw had been exploring new opportunities after stepping down from his post at Stanford, citing the direction the program was heading. He had also been involved in evaluating draft prospects for NFL Network, further highlighting his deep understanding of the game.
Shaw’s hire is part of a broader trend this offseason where several Broncos coaches and executives have been poached by other teams. This includes defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, who interviewed for head coaching roles with both the Jets and Raiders, as well as assistant GM Darren Mougey, who was hired as the Jets’ new general manager.
The Lions’ decision to bring Shaw on board is expected to be an important step in ensuring continued success for their high-powered offense, as they prepare for the upcoming season.
