The Detroit Lions have been actively reshaping their secondary this offseason, but their work might not be finished just yet. According to Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox, one more veteran addition could be on the horizon—cornerback Rasul Douglas, most recently with the Buffalo Bills, is being floated as a potential fit in Detroit.

Why Douglas Could Be a Smart Addition

Even with several key moves already made, Knox suggests the Lions could benefit from adding more experience to their defensive backfield. “The Detroit Lions should also give Douglas a look,” Knox wrote. “Detroit has added the likes of D.J. Reed and Rock Ya-Sin to its cornerback room this offseason, but it lost Carlton Davis and dealt with defensive depth issues a season ago.”

Indeed, the departure of Carlton Davis—who signed with the New England Patriots—left a noticeable gap. While Detroit quickly responded by bringing in new talent, there’s a valid argument for continuing to strengthen the secondary with a player like Douglas.

A Closer Look at Douglas’ Recent Performance

Douglas had a solid 2023 campaign, but 2024 wasn’t as kind. His coverage numbers dipped—he allowed opposing quarterbacks to complete nearly 73% of their passes and posted a 122 passer rating when targeted. Still, his veteran leadership and past success, including a Super Bowl ring, make him a potentially valuable depth piece.

Building a Reliable Cornerback Unit

General Manager Brad Holmes hasn’t been idle. He moved quickly to replace Davis by signing D.J. Reed and adding Avonte Maddox and Rock Ya-Sin to round out the group. On paper, Detroit’s cornerback room looks solid, but Douglas could offer added versatility and leadership—something that always comes in handy during a deep playoff push.

For now, the Lions appear well-equipped defensively, but if the opportunity presents itself, don’t be surprised if Rasul Douglas ends up in Honolulu Blue. In a league where depth can make or break a season, Detroit may not be done adding veteran pieces just yet.
