Lions Snubbed by Undrafted CB Jakob Robinson, Picked 49ers Instead

The NFL Draft may be over, but that doesn’t mean the action has stopped. Once the final pick is made, teams shift their focus to the undrafted free agent market — a scramble to scoop up hidden gems who didn’t hear their name called. The Detroit Lions had their eyes on one of those players: BYU cornerback Jakob Robinson.

Robinson, who put together a strong career at BYU with 190 tackles, 11 interceptions, and 21 pass breakups, ended up signing with the San Francisco 49ers — turning down offers from the Lions, Dolphins, and Ravens.

It’s a bit of a gut punch for Detroit, who clearly saw potential in Robinson’s versatility. At 5-foot-10 with 4.4 speed, he’s the kind of quick, tough corner who could compete in the slot or on the outside. The Lions wanted him in their secondary battle, but he saw a better fit with the Niners.

To make matters more frustrating for Detroit fans — and amusing for Green Bay — it’s a small win for a division rival watching the Lions miss out. The Packers, who are chasing both the Lions and Vikings in the NFC North, are no doubt enjoying the sight of Detroit getting passed over.

Detroit has dominated the Packers lately, winning six of the last seven matchups. But even small victories like this — an undrafted player choosing someone else — don’t go unnoticed in one of the NFL’s most heated rivalries.
