Lions Star’s Brutally Honest Reaction to Ben Johnson Leaving

The Detroit Lions are preparing for a new era after losing offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to the Chicago Bears, and star tight end Sam LaPorta isn’t hiding how much it stings. During an appearance on Up & Adams, LaPorta opened up about Johnson’s departure, admitting that while he’s happy for his former coach, it won’t be easy facing him twice a year in the NFC North.

“Of course, happy for Ben. He was one of the big reasons that they brought me into the Lions. Nothing but respect for him, but again, on Sunday afternoons this fall, there’ll be friends turned to enemies, I guess,” LaPorta said.

The 2023 second-round pick thrived under Johnson’s system, racking up 1,615 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns in his first two seasons. Given their history, it’s no surprise LaPorta is feeling the impact of Johnson’s departure. However, he also expressed excitement about working with the Lions’ new offensive staff, hoping to build on the team’s recent success.

Detroit went outside the organization to replace Johnson, meaning LaPorta and the offense will need to adjust to a fresh playbook. Regardless of the changes, LaPorta remains a key piece for the Lions as they look to stay on top of the NFC North—where they’ll now have to battle Johnson’s Bears twice a season.
