Lions Team Up with Texans in Camp; Joseph Tapped to Wave Green Flag at MIS

The Detroit Lions are doubling up on joint practices this summer — and they’ve got a fan favorite hitting the track, too.

According to reports, the Lions will host the Houston Texans for a pair of joint practices at their training facility in Allen Park ahead of their preseason finale on August 23 at Ford Field. That matchup comes just a week after another joint practice session with the Miami Dolphins, giving the Lions two chances to mix it up with outside competition during camp.

Detroit has a unique preseason slate this year, with four games on the schedule thanks to their appearance in the Hall of Fame Game against the Los Angeles Chargers on July 31 in Canton, Ohio. Since 2022, the Lions have made joint practices a regular part of camp, and head coach Dan Campbell says it brings out something different in the team.

“The intensity goes up,” Campbell said during last year’s sessions with the Giants. “You’re seeing your guys go up against another team, with different fans, different energy. It helps us evaluate and gives the players a fresh challenge.”

Fans may remember the thriller between the Lions and Texans last season, when Jake Bates drilled a 52-yard game-winner as time expired. If that’s any indication, these joint practices should be a high-energy affair.

Meanwhile, safety Kerby Joseph — who recently became the highest-paid player at his position — is set to serve as grand marshal for the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway on June 8. MIS announced the honor on Instagram, continuing a recent trend of Lions representation at the track. Past grand marshals include Cory Schlesinger in 2023 and even former coach Matt Patricia in 2019.

Between the extra preseason action and Joseph’s big day at MIS, it’s shaping up to be a busy summer for the Honolulu Blue.
