A longtime NFL wide receiver is considering stepping away from the game
The Detroit Lions are coming off a dominant 2024 season, finishing with a 15-2 regular-season record and solidifying themselves as a top contender in the NFC. With most of their core players returning, the team is in prime position to make another deep playoff run. However, as they prepare for the 2025 season, they may be facing an unexpected roster change—one of their veteran players is seriously contemplating retirement.
Allen Robinson Weighing His Future in the NFL
Allen Robinson, a former Pro Bowl wide receiver, is considering stepping away from the game after 11 seasons in the league. The 31-year-old spent last season with the Lions, though he saw limited action after being signed to the practice squad in August and later promoted to the active roster in September.
Robinson recently opened up about his decision-making process, explaining that his family is playing a major role in determining his future.
“For me, it’s now just taking time to evaluate what next year looks like for me in general,” Robinson told The Detroit Free Press. “That’s kind of where I’m at with it. So I’m taking some time to make this decision with my family.”
A Well-Traveled Career Comes Full Circle
Robinson’s potential retirement would mark the end of a career that began when he was selected in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Over the years, he became a reliable target for multiple teams, including the Chicago Bears, Los Angeles Rams, Pittsburgh Steelers, and New York Giants.
His most productive stretch came with the Jaguars, where he earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2015 after posting 1,400 yards and 14 touchdowns. Despite some ups and downs in later seasons, Robinson remained a respected veteran presence in every locker room he joined.
For Robinson, signing with the Lions in 2024 was a homecoming of sorts. He grew up in Michigan and attended St. Mary’s Preparatory in Orchard Lake Village, making his time in Detroit a fitting chapter in his football journey.
Family at the Heart of the Decision
At this stage of his career, Robinson is prioritizing life beyond football. While he has not officially announced his retirement, his comments suggest he is leaning toward stepping away from the game.
“For me, it’s more so about figuring out what my future in this game and in this league looks like,” he said. “Playing, finishing Season 11, having a family, figuring out different things with them, moving around and stuff like that.”
With free agency approaching on March 12, Robinson will officially become an unrestricted free agent. Whether he decides to return for another season or retire, he leaves behind a career marked by resilience, professionalism, and an undeniable impact on every team he played for.
As the Lions look ahead to the 2025 season, Robinson’s future remains uncertain—but if this is the end, he walks away with a legacy that speaks for itself.
