NFC North Showdown: Lions vs. Vikings – This One’s for the History Books
Alright, football fans, get ready for an absolute banger of a game! The Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings are about to square off in Week 18 at Ford Field, and it’s got everything you could want in a season finale. Not only is the NFC North title on the line, but the NFC’s No. 1 seed is up for grabs too. Oh, and get this: per Elias Sports, this matchup boasts the most combined wins (28) in any regular-season game EVER. Yeah, history is being made here.
The NFC North has been ridiculously stacked this year. The Lions, Vikings, Packers, and, well… maybe not the Bears, have all been turning heads. Even the Packers, who narrowly lost to the Vikings in Week 17, are an 11-win team. With Detroit snagging a clutch win on Monday Night Football in Week 17, the division hit a combined 43 wins for the season, tying the NFL record since the 2002 realignment. And unless Week 18 somehow ends in a tie, the NFC North will almost certainly set a new record with 44 wins.
Now, if only the Bears hadn’t face-planted after their promising 4-2 start. Imagine the records this division could’ve smashed if Chicago had just held it together.
A Wild-Card Team with 14 Wins? What?!
Here’s the kicker: this season, someone is getting relegated to the wild-card round with 14 wins. Yup, you read that right. And if the Packers manage to beat the Bears, they’ll set a new record with 12 wins as a third-place team in their division. Talk about stacked!
Lions Are Roaring in the North
Sure, the Lions could fumble their chance at a second straight division title, but let’s give credit where it’s due. Since 2022, Detroit has been on fire in divisional matchups, going 14-3. The only teams with similar records in their divisions during this stretch? The Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills – that’s elite company.
The Lions are a perfect 5-0 in NFC North games this year, including a nail-biter 31-29 win over the Vikings back in Week 7. And while the Vikings are no pushovers (they’re an insane 9-1 in one-score games this season), Detroit’s proven they can pull off the clutch wins too.
The Margin for Error? Basically Zero
This season, Detroit has outscored their divisional rivals 148-111, but three of those wins were decided by one-score margins – we’re talking nail-biting field goals and last-second Hail Mary defenses. The Vikings, on the other hand, thrive in tight games. Since Kevin O’Connell took over as their head coach in 2022, they’ve gone 26-9 in one-score games.
