Detroit Lions wide receiver Maurice Alexander Jr. shared tragic news on January 6, 2025, revealing that his 13-year-old nephew, Johvan “Woodah” Taylor, was killed in a shooting in Florida City on January 4. Alexander expressed his heartbreak in a post on X, linking to a CBS News Miami article detailing the incident.
Taylor, who had celebrated his 13th birthday in November, was a player for the Florida City Razorbacks little league team. He was described as a kind, outgoing, and well-behaved young boy, known for his big smile and good grades. His family and friends mourned his loss deeply, with his aunt, Jakilah Brady, stating that they are still in shock and seeking justice. Taylor was caught in the crossfire when shots were fired into a group of children. He was airlifted to Jackson South Medical Center but later died from his injuries.
The shooting remains under investigation, with no arrests made so far. The police are urging anyone with information to come forward, offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. Alexander, who rejoined the Lions practice squad in December, has been dealing with the loss of a family member while continuing his professional career.
