The Detroit Lions’ recent success has been largely built on their dominance in the trenches. General manager Brad Holmes and his team have prioritized strengthening both the offensive and defensive lines while complementing them with skill position players. A prime example of this strategy is their 2021 first-round selection of tackle Penei Sewell, who has since earned two first-team All-Pro honors.
Sewell was a foundational piece in Holmes’ first draft class, and in the years since, Detroit has continued to build a strong, physical offensive line while adding talented playmakers. Now, in ESPN analyst Field Yates’ latest mock draft, the Lions appear to be circling back to the trenches, targeting both a defensive tackle and an offensive lineman in the first two rounds.
After falling short in the postseason, Detroit is once again looking to bolster the line of scrimmage. The offensive line is showing signs of aging, while the defensive front still has questions regarding its ability to consistently generate pressure. With the 28th overall pick, Yates projects the Lions will select Oregon defensive tackle Derrick Harmon.
“Injuries befell the Detroit defense down the stretch last season, and some of them will linger into this upcoming season — including stalwart defensive tackle Alim McNeill’s torn ACL. Harmon could help fill that hole after his breakthrough 2024 season,” Yates wrote. “His 34 pressures in his lone year with the Ducks were by far the most of any FBS defensive tackle. He has the length, power at the point of attack and pursuit speed as a rusher to make a difference.”
With their second-round pick at No. 60, Yates predicts the Lions will turn to Georgia offensive lineman Tate Ratledge.
“The Lions lost Kevin Zeitler in free agency, and if they don’t view either Christian Mahogany or Kayode Awosika as a lock to start at right guard, Ratledge would be a great pick. He is among the most polished players in the class,” Yates explained.
By continuing to reinforce both sides of the line, Detroit looks to maintain its identity as a tough, physical team ready to contend at the highest level.
