Major Shift? Trump Administration Set to Decide Fate of Migrant Children in Court

Trump’s latest immigration move just made things even tougher for migrant kids fighting to stay in the U.S.

His administration has cut funding for a program that provided legal help to undocumented, unaccompanied minors. The Florence Immigrant & Refugee Project, a nonprofit that helps these children navigate the legal system, confirmed that their program has been effectively shut down.

Now, migrant children  many of whom don’t speak English and have already been through trauma  will have to represent themselves in court against government attorneys. Roxana Avila-Cimpeanu, the group’s deputy director, called the move “inhumane,” pointing out that these kids are often alone, detained, and have already survived abandonment or abuse.

Unlike in criminal cases, deportation hearings don’t guarantee legal representation, meaning these kids will now have to fend for themselves. This decision is part of Trump’s broader immigration crackdown, which now seems to be zeroing in on unaccompanied minors to boost deportation numbers.
