Jack Campbell Looks Ready to Lead the Lions Defense — and Everyone’s Taking Notice

It’s becoming increasingly clear at Detroit Lions training camp: Jack Campbell is stepping into a leadership role on defense — and thriving.

Head coach Dan Campbell has spoken glowingly about the third-year linebacker, who seems poised for a breakout season. Entering his third year in the NFL — all with the Lions — Jack Campbell is being recognized not only for his production but also for the presence he’s bringing to the field.

Campbell has been highlighted on multiple “most improved defenders” lists ahead of the 2025 season, and there’s good reason for it. He’s showing signs of taking a massive leap — both in play and leadership.

As the Lions navigate uncertainty surrounding Alex Anzalone’s contract situation, the defense may need to lean even more heavily on Jack Campbell to carry the load heading into Week 1. So far, he’s embraced that responsibility.

“This is his defense. He’s taken ownership and sets the tone for everybody,” Dan Campbell said in an interview with SiriusXM.

That’s no small compliment, especially considering the other established names on the Lions’ defensive roster — including D.J. Reed, Kerby Joseph, Derrick Barnes, and Anzalone himself. But the coaching staff clearly sees Campbell rising to the occasion, alongside defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard.

When asked about the praise from his head coach, Jack Campbell responded with humility and maturity.

“When I came back, we talked individually and he let me know. It means a lot. I can take pride in that. But, it’s not gonna change who I am and who I’ve been, stepping foot here since my rookie year. I’m not gonna change who I am. It’s an honor, but it also takes 10 other guys on the field,” Campbell told Brad Galli of WXYZ Detroit during a Friday camp interview.

Beyond leadership, the numbers back up Campbell’s rise.

Pro Football Focus (PFF) recently ranked him No. 8 on their Top 32 Linebackers for 2025, placing him above some major names — even Anzalone. Analyst Mason Cameron praised Campbell for his rapid development.

“Campbell took a massive step forward in his second season as a pro, with his 78.7 PFF overall grade ranking fourth in the NFL among linebackers with at least 600 snaps,” Cameron wrote. “While he’s always been a plus run defender, it was his massive leap in coverage that earned him his placement on this list… Another step forward in 2025 will put him in the top-five conversation.”

If Campbell continues this upward trajectory and stays healthy, he could be the key to unlocking Detroit’s full defensive potential — and pushing the team into real contention against NFC powerhouses like the Eagles.
