Free-agent cornerback Cameron Sutton, who spent the 2023 season with the Detroit Lions, can now put his legal issues in the rearview mirror. According to NFL reporter Aaron Wilson, Sutton’s agent confirmed that the domestic violence case against him has been dismissed.

The incident dates back to March 7 in Florida, when Sutton was accused of assaulting his then-girlfriend. The allegations were serious—he was charged with a third-degree felony for allegedly hitting and choking her. An affidavit obtained by the Tampa Bay Times described the disturbing details: Sutton reportedly picked her up, slammed her against a wall, bit her neck, and choked her until she passed out briefly.

After the alleged assault, Sutton vanished. He cut off communication and wasn’t heard from for some time. Authorities in Hillsborough County issued a warrant for his arrest. Shockingly, he was at the Lions’ training facility when news of the warrant broke.

“He was actually in our building (when the news broke),” team president Rod Wood told Fox 2 in March. “We found him. He was down with our strength staff. He just kinda showed up unexpectedly to work out. We were able to talk to him in person, not me, but other members of the staff, and he left the building. We released him the next day, and no one has spoken to him since.”

After his release, Sutton returned to the Pittsburgh Steelers on a one-year deal—his second stint with the team—but missed the first eight games due to suspension. His on-field return didn’t go as hoped; he managed only 15 tackles and three pass deflections in nine games, and Pittsburgh chose not to bring him back.

With the case now dismissed, Sutton looks to move forward—on and off the field.
