Marcus Davenport Understands the Stakes for His Upcoming Lions Season

The Detroit Lions haven’t made a ton of splashy moves in free agency, and that’s been a bit surprising given their defensive needs. One key area many thought they’d address was pass rush, but instead of bringing in a new face, they decided to re-sign a familiar one—Marcus Davenport.

Davenport, who missed most of last season due to injury, is back on a one-year deal, determined to prove he can stay healthy and be a difference-maker. He admitted that sitting out and watching his teammates pick up his slack was tough, and it’s motivating him heading into 2025.

“It was horrible,” Davenport said. “Another year of sitting out and being sidelined so early and then just having to look at my guys take up the load that I was supposed to carry.”

For him, it’s all about consistency—getting reps, staying on the field, and proving to himself (and the Lions) that he can be a reliable force alongside Aidan Hutchinson. Detroit is counting on him in a big way, especially with few outside additions to the pass rush. If he stays healthy, he could be exactly what the defense needs.
