Matt Eberflus, the new defensive coordinator for the Cowboys, is already hyping up his new squad. He’s calling his Dallas cornerbacks the best in the league—even better than the ones he coached in Chicago, which is a bold statement considering he had Pro Bowler Jaylon Johnson there.
Eberflus hasn’t even run a single practice in Dallas yet, but he’s convinced that DaRon Bland and Trevon Diggs are top-tier talent. “They’ve got length, speed, great coverage ability,” he told reporters. “It all starts with man coverage.”
Of course, there might be a little bad blood left over from his time in Chicago. Johnson reportedly had a heated confrontation with Eberflus after a tough loss to Detroit, and another Bears corner, Tyrique Stevenson, was responsible for the Hail Mary disaster against Washington. So, it’s not shocking that Eberflus is now singing the praises of his new crew in Dallas.
The Bears and Cowboys will cross paths in the 2025 season, but before that, they’ll compete in free agency. Both teams run a 4-3 defense and are on the hunt for similar players. One name to watch? Cowboys defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa, who’s hitting free agency. The Bears might be interested, but Eberflus isn’t ruling out keeping him in Dallas.
Beyond defense, Eberflus is also positioning himself as a mentor to new Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer. “I’m here for you,” he told him, offering advice based on his experience as a head coach in Chicago.
One tip Schottenheimer might want to skip? Eberflus’ clock management—because Bears fans won’t forget that infamous timeout he never called.
