Matthew Stafford has decided to come back for the 2025 season with the Los Angeles Rams, but he’s asking for a reworked contract to make it happen. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Stafford is committed to returning, but he wants some adjustments to his current deal before he takes the field again.
Stafford, who is coming off a tough divisional-round loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, had been unsure about his future. The 36-year-old quarterback had been reflecting on his next move, leaving the Rams and their fans in limbo. After the loss, Rams head coach Sean McVay expressed his desire for clarity on Stafford’s decision sooner rather than later.
Currently, Stafford’s contract with the Rams is a four-year, $160 million extension signed in 2022. Before the 2024 season, Stafford reworked his deal into a one-year, $40 million agreement, giving up guarantees for 2025. His current contract includes just a $4 million signing bonus, which is due three days after the start of the new league year on March 12.
Despite the challenges, Stafford remains committed to the Rams, especially after playing a crucial role in the team’s Super Bowl win during his first season in LA following his trade from Detroit. With the contract renegotiation on the table, the Rams will likely need to meet Stafford’s financial demands if they want him back for another season. Now, it’s up to the Rams to decide how to handle Stafford’s contract situation this offseason.
