A.J. McCarron Says His All-Time Favorite Bama Moment Had Nothing to Do with a Natty
A.J. McCarron’s name is still all over the Alabama record books—most completions, most passing yards, and third all-time in touchdown passes. He helped lead the Tide to back-to-back national titles in 2011 and 2012, and won a crazy 36 games as the starting QB under Nick Saban. Safe to say, he’s a Bama legend.
But when it comes to his most special memory in Tuscaloosa? It had nothing to do with the big trophies.
In a recent interview, McCarron shared that his favorite moment actually happened during his final home game on November 23, 2013, when Bama blew out Chattanooga 49-0. What made it unforgettable? He got to throw a pass to his younger brother, Corey.
McCarron had been asking Saban to put Corey in, and once Bama had a comfortable lead, Saban and then-OC Doug Nussmeier made it happen. The play call—called “Nashville”—was a simple quick out route. Corey, who was a walk-on tight end at the time, caught it for three yards.
“That was it for me,” A.J. said on The Next Round while at the Regions Tradition golf tourney. “I’d been telling Saban, ‘Hey, I want him in.’ Then it finally happened. I can still hear my mom screaming in the stands.”
More than 10 years later, McCarron still gets emotional talking about it. “It chokes me up,” he admitted. “To have that moment with my brother—and now to be able to share that memory with our kids—it’s just really special.”
