The Syracuse Mets delivered a dominant performance on both sides of the ball Wednesday afternoon, riding strong pitching and timely hitting to a 5-1 victory over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders at NBT Bank Stadium.
Joey Meneses played the hero at the plate, lacing a pair of run-scoring doubles to fuel the Mets’ offense.
Mets Strike Early Behind Meneses
Syracuse (2-2) wasted no time getting on the board. With two outs in the first inning, Billy McKinney singled, setting the stage for Meneses, who ripped a double down the left-field line to bring him home and give the Mets a 1-0 lead.
The duo struck again in the fifth inning with another two-out rally. McKinney singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch before Meneses once again delivered, smashing a double to left field to push the lead to 2-0.
Hamel Dominates on the Mound
While the offense clicked, starting pitcher Dom Hamel kept the RailRiders in check. The right-hander tossed five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out three. He needed only 57 pitches to complete his efficient outing, giving the Mets a strong foundation to build on.
Syracuse Extends the Lead
The Mets kept the pressure on in the sixth. Luis De Los Santos led off with a single, and Chris Williams drew a walk to put two aboard. Travis Swaggerty then lined a single to right field, scoring De Los Santos and extending the lead to 3-0.
Two more insurance runs came in the eighth. Luke Ritter walked and advanced to third on a groundout and wild pitch. Swaggerty then brought him home with a sacrifice fly to center, making it 4-0. A few batters later, Donovan Walton tacked on another with a two-out RBI single to left, capping Syracuse’s scoring at 5-0.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre managed to scratch across a lone run in the ninth, but the outcome was never in doubt. The Mets’ dominant pitching and Meneses’ clutch bat sealed a convincing win as they continue their early-season push.
