Mets Cooling Off on Re-Signing Pete Alonso: What’s Next

It looks like the Mets and Pete Alonso are heading for a breakup. Talks between the two sides have been dragging on, and Alonso recently rejected what appears to be the Mets’ final offer: three years for around $70 million. That’s not exactly a “wow” offer for someone with his résumé.

MLB insider Ken Rosenthal isn’t convinced the Mets are really pushing hard to keep Alonso. He thinks if they truly wanted him to stay, they’d have made a stronger pitch. Now, with Alonso seemingly on the market, other teams—like the Blue Jays—are reportedly eyeing the slugger.

Speaking of the Blue Jays, their current first baseman, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., signed a one-year extension, but he’ll be a free agent after the 2025 season. If Toronto doesn’t think they can lock him down long-term, they might trade him, and the Mets could be a potential landing spot. Mets owner Steve Cohen has already shown he’s willing to spend big, as seen with the 15-year, $765 million deal he handed Juan Soto.

As for Alonso, his power at the plate is undeniable. Since his breakout rookie season in 2019, when he smashed 53 home runs, he’s been one of the best power hitters in the league. Even though his numbers dipped slightly last season, he’s still a three-time All-Star and a two-time Home Run Derby champ. However, it seems like the Mets are betting on other options instead of giving him a bigger deal.

Where Alonso lands next could shake up the league, but for now, it looks like his time in Queens is almost up.
