Mets Move On After Tempting Pete Alonso with Bold Offer

It looks like Pete Alonso and the Mets are parting ways after some failed contract talks. The Mets reportedly offered Alonso a three-year deal worth around $68-70 million, but he turned it down. After that, the team started to move on, signing Jesse Winker to a one-year contract instead. Rumor has it Alonso might be heading to the Blue Jays, though nothing’s official yet.

If Alonso does leave, he’ll wrap up an impressive Mets career with a .249 average, 226 home runs, 586 RBIs, and accolades like the 2019 NL Rookie of the Year, four All-Star nods, and two Home Run Derby wins.

The Mets have a potential replacement in Mark Vientos, who had a strong rookie season in 2024, hitting .266 with 27 home runs and an impressive postseason performance. If Vientos slides over to first base, the team will need to figure out their third base situation—possibly turning to Brett Baty or splurging on an established player with the money saved from Alonso’s deal.

The Mets tried their best to keep Alonso, but it seems like both sides are ready to move on unless something drastic changes. Stay tuned for updates as Alonso’s next move unfolds.
