Mets’ Offseason Targets Slip Away: No Sasaki or Castillo

Mets’ Plans Hit a Snag: No Roki Sasaki or Luis Castillo for Now

The New York Mets have had a solid offseason so far, but if you were hoping to see Roki Sasaki or Luis Castillo in Mets uniforms, don’t hold your breath. According to reports, the team isn’t in the running for either pitcher this winter.

After a surprise trip to the NLCS last season, the Mets were determined to build on their momentum. They made waves with the jaw-dropping signing of Juan Soto to a record-breaking deal and locked in Sean Manaea after his impressive 2024 campaign. But they’re not done yet—there’s still work to do in the bullpen, outfield, and rotation.

However, don’t expect them to land two of the biggest names available. MLB insider Andy Martino says the Mets seem content with their current pitching depth. Luis Castillo, for example, is on the trade block in Seattle, but the Mets haven’t shown much interest. And while Japanese star Roki Sasaki has been on their radar, industry chatter suggests they’re unlikely to snag him either.

Castillo, a three-time All-Star, had a solid 2024 season with the Mariners, posting a 3.64 ERA and 175 strikeouts over 175.1 innings. But his $72 million contract might be a dealbreaker for the Mets.

Meanwhile, Sasaki, the 23-year-old phenom from Japan, is one of the most sought-after free agents this offseason. Rumors had the Mets as frontrunners, but recent updates suggest they may have cooled off on that pursuit.

For now, it looks like the Mets’ rotation is set as they head into spring training. Whether they surprise us with another big move remains to be seen, but Mets fans may need to temper expectations when it comes to these two pitching stars.
