Mets Shake Up Roster: First Round of Spring Training Cuts Announced

Top Prospects Among First Wave of Roster Moves

With just 23 days remaining until Opening Day in Houston, the New York Mets have started trimming their roster, reassigning 13 players to minor-league camp. The move is part of the club’s annual spring training process, ensuring that only the most prepared players remain in contention for a spot on the Opening Day roster.

Among the cuts were some of the Mets’ top prospects, including right-handers Brandon Sproat and Blade Tidwell, as well as versatile infielder and center fielder Jett Williams. In total, seven position players and six pitchers were sent down, reducing the major league camp roster to 57 players.

Brandon Sproat’s Strong Impression

One of the most notable names in this group, Brandon Sproat, delivered an impressive spring training performance before being sent down. The 24-year-old right-hander made a strong case for his future call-up, particularly with his lone start against the Washington Nationals. Sproat was flawless in two innings, retiring all six batters he faced while striking out one. His fastball was electric, reaching 99 mph, with his lone strikeout coming against Robert Hassell III.

Sproat’s stock has risen significantly since 2024, when he showcased his talent across three Mets minor league affiliates. He posted a 3.40 ERA over 116.1 innings, tallying 131 strikeouts while maintaining an impressive 1.109 WHIP. Given the Mets’ rotation concerns—including injuries to Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas—Sproat could find himself in the big leagues sooner rather than later.

Looking Ahead

While these roster cuts may seem disappointing for some of these young talents, they are far from the end of their journey. Many of these players remain key parts of the Mets’ future, with potential call-ups throughout the season depending on injuries and performance.

With the first round of cuts complete, the Mets will continue evaluating their roster, fine-tuning their team for what they hope will be a competitive season.
