New York Adds Alexander Canario to Outfield Depth
The New York Mets have made a low-risk move to bolster their outfield depth, acquiring 24-year-old Alexander Canario from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for cash considerations. The trade, announced Monday, comes after the Cubs designated Canario for assignment following their signing of veteran infielder Justin Turner.
Canario’s Path to New York
Canario’s journey to the Mets has been anything but straightforward. Originally signed by the San Francisco Giants, he was traded to the Cubs in 2021. Baseball America ranked him among the Cubs’ top-15 prospects in both 2023 and 2024, highlighting his potential as a solid offensive contributor.
Despite this, Chicago opted to cut ties with him, making him available for the Mets to scoop up at a bargain price.
Mets’ Crowded Outfield
Though Canario is a promising young player, his immediate path to playing time in New York appears uncertain. The Mets already have a crowded outfield featuring Juan Soto, Brandon Nimmo, Tyrone Taylor, Jose Siri, Starling Marte, Jesse Winker, and Jeff McNeil. As a result, Canario is expected to begin the season in Triple-A, where he can continue developing his game.
A Glimpse of MLB Potential
Canario got his first taste of big-league action last season, appearing in 15 games for the Cubs. In 28 plate appearances, he recorded seven hits, including a home run, finishing with a respectable .280/.357/.440 slash line. His power and plate discipline could make him a useful piece for the Mets if injuries or performance issues create an opportunity.
A Low-Cost Gamble for the Mets
With the Mets aiming for a deep postseason run, adding Canario gives them a potential asset without significant financial risk. If he can continue his development and earn a spot in the majors, this small move could turn into a valuable addition for the team.
