Micah Parsons Defends Cowboys’ Trade After Deebo Samuel Deal Raises Questions
Deebo Samuel is officially on the move, and fans across the league are wondering why their teams didn’t make a push for the star receiver. But according to Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons, the situation isn’t as simple as it appears.
Samuel’s departure from the San Francisco 49ers wasn’t exactly surprising—both sides were ready to move on. Still, it’s a bit shocking to see him land with the Washington Commanders.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that the 49ers are sending Samuel to Washington in exchange for a fifth-round pick. That relatively low price tag has left many fans scratching their heads, questioning why it didn’t take more to acquire a player of his caliber.
One Cowboys fan even compared the deal to a move Dallas made last season, when the team traded a fourth-round pick to acquire Jonathan Mingo. The comparison prompted Parsons to step in and provide some perspective on why the two trades are completely different.
Parsons pointed out the biggest difference: Washington is taking on Samuel’s $22 million contract, whereas Dallas only had to absorb Mingo’s much smaller $1.5 million cap hit.
That financial detail changes everything. While Samuel is undoubtedly a talented receiver, his hefty contract played a major role in determining his trade value.
Parsons clearly understands more than just football—he’s got a solid grasp of the business side of the game too. And with his own massive contract extension on the horizon, he’s likely well aware of how cap space impacts roster decisions. In fact, when the time comes, his cap hit might end up surpassing both Samuel’s and Mingo’s combined.
