The Dallas Cowboys seemed set to retain head coach Mike McCarthy after a lackluster 7-10 season, but a contract disagreement has abruptly ended his tenure. McCarthy leaves Dallas with a 49-35 record over five seasons, though his time with the team is marked by just one playoff victory.

One of the biggest challenges McCarthy faced during his time with the Cowboys was hiring and keeping top-tier assistant coaches. One bright spot in that area came when he brought in former Vikings head coach and Cowboys defensive backs coach Mike Zimmer as the defensive coordinator. Zimmer stepped in after Dan Quinn departed and managed to turn things around for the defense.

However, Zimmer’s relationship with McCarthy wasn’t exactly harmonious. Zimmer openly stated early in the season that he and McCarthy didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Despite those differences, Zimmer implemented changes that helped the defense finish strong, giving even top-tier offenses a hard time. Now, with McCarthy gone, Zimmer’s future in Dallas hangs in the balance.

The Cowboys’ next head coach will likely want to bring in their own staff, which could leave Zimmer on the chopping block. While Dallas still boasts a coaching staff with plenty of football expertise, letting Zimmer go could prove to be a costly mistake.

Could Dallas’ Defense Fall Apart Without Mike Zimmer?

Although the defense stumbled at the start of the season, Zimmer made key adjustments that led to noticeable improvements. Whoever steps into the head coaching role should strongly consider keeping Zimmer for another year, but the odds of that happening seem slim.

This season, Zimmer faced significant challenges, including injuries to key players like Trevon Diggs and the underdevelopment of younger talents such as Mazi Smith. On top of that, several players brought in during Dan Quinn’s tenure were used in roles that didn’t suit their strengths. Even with these obstacles, Zimmer managed to get the most out of the roster he had.

If Dallas follows the trend of hiring a younger, offensive-minded head coach, there’s a good chance that coach might bring in an inexperienced defensive coordinator. This could lead to the misuse of stars like Micah Parsons, creating more problems for the defense. In fact, such a move might hurt the team even more than hiring a mediocre offensive mind to support Dak Prescott.

While a complete overhaul of the coaching staff may be tempting for Jerry Jones, it would be a disservice to Zimmer, who did a commendable job under difficult circumstances. As odd as McCarthy’s departure may be, it shouldn’t lead to an unnecessary house cleaning that sets the defense.
