Minnesota Vikings Holding Back on QB Signing? Here’s What We Know

The Vikings are in no rush to sign a veteran QB, and now we know why.

Minnesota is rolling with J.J. McCarthy as their QB1 for now, but they’ve been linked to several experienced signal-callers this offseason. They tried to bring back Sam Darnold, but he chose Seattle. Then they went after Daniel Jones, only to lose him to the Colts. There were even whispers about Aaron Rodgers, but the team backed off, not wanting to create a QB controversy.

So why haven’t they added a veteran backup yet? According to Yahoo Sports’ Charles Robinson, it’s all about draft picks. If the Vikings sign a free-agent quarterback before the draft, they could lose some valuable compensatory picks for 2026   a third-rounder and a fifth-rounder. To keep those picks intact, they’ll likely wait until after the draft before bringing in a backup.

One name to watch? Carson Wentz. He’s got experience in Kevin O’Connell’s system from his time with the Rams and would probably be open to a backup role. Meanwhile, Minnesota will ride with McCarthy and see how things shake out.
