“Missed Chance”: Lions Already Wishing They’d Made That Game-Changer Move

Detroit’s been looking sharp early in 2025, but not everything about the offseason has aged well — and one decision in particular seems to be coming under tough scrutiny. The Lions opted not to bring back veteran pass rusher Za’Darius Smith, even though he had openly pushed for a return after a strong 2024. Now, with edge injuries creeping back into the picture — especially relating to Marcus Davenport — fans and analysts alike are questioning whether the team should have done more to solidify that edge rush.

Smith’s quick impact with the Philadelphia Eagles (earning a strong PFF grade in his very first outing) has only added fuel to those regrets. Seeing how thin Detroit’s depth remains at the EDGE position, that missed opportunity to re-sign a proven veteran now looks like one of the more notable lapses of the offseason.

GM Brad Holmes did defend Detroit’s free agency strategy as being one of balance — maintaining cap flexibility, preserving the core, and making “safer” moves rather than splashy ones.  But the consequence is that when injuries hit, or when the offense or defense need a wrinkle or veteran anchor, there are fewer proven options to turn to.

Detroit’s defensive line has had its moments, but against top-tier offenses and dangerous QBs, that lack of an edge rusher with Smith’s experience is starting to look like a thin margin. As the season rolls on, this could be one of those what-if moments Lions fans and the team will revisit often.
