Nate Sudfeld’s NFL Future Fading Fast After Detroit Exit

The quarterback carousel is always spinning in the NFL, but for Nate Sudfeld, it’s come to a screeching halt. After parting ways with the Detroit Lions ahead of the 2024 season, the veteran quarterback remains unsigned—and there’s little sign that will change soon.

A Quiet Offseason for the Former Lion

While other quarterbacks across the league are securing backup roles or gearing up for training camp battles, Sudfeld is still waiting by the phone. It’s a tough reality for the 30-year-old, who spent two seasons on the Lions’ roster but never made a meaningful dent on the field.

Despite being Jared Goff’s backup, Sudfeld saw action in only two games during the 2022 season. His highlight? A single sack for a loss of seven yards. Beyond that, most of his snaps came in the preseason—more proving ground than stage.

From Record-Breaker to Roster Long Shot

Sudfeld’s career didn’t start off quietly. Drafted in the sixth round in 2016 by Washington, he later landed with the Eagles, where he made his NFL debut in the final game of the 2017 season. That debut was memorable: completing 83% of his passes (19 of 23), breaking a record that stood since 1968.

That spark, though, never ignited a lasting career. Over the years, Sudfeld became the quintessential depth piece—valuable in practice, seldom on the field.

Where Does He Go From Here?

At this point in the summer, the odds of Sudfeld latching on with another NFL team are growing slimmer. With rosters close to set and teams opting for younger, developmental quarterbacks or proven veterans, there’s not much room for someone like Sudfeld.

Still, in the NFL, one injury or change of plan can alter the landscape overnight. For Sudfeld, the goal is likely to stay ready—just in case.
