Congressional Republicans are looking for ways to push back against federal judges they believe are overstepping their authority especially those ruling against Trump.
Some conservatives want to impeach certain judges, like U.S. District Judge James Boasberg, who recently blocked some deportations. Texas Rep. Brandon Gill has already drafted impeachment articles against him. But GOP leadership isn’t exactly eager to dive into judicial impeachment, knowing they probably don’t have the votes to make it happen.
Even if impeachment made it through the House, the Senate would almost certainly stop it since conviction requires 67 votes. Instead, the administration is leaning toward a bill from Rep. Darrell Issa that would restrict judges’ rulings rather than remove them from the bench.
It’s a brewing power struggle between Congress and the judiciary, with Trump’s policies caught in the middle.
