New Cowboys Leader Takes the Wheel with Bold Strategy

The Dallas Cowboys kicked off free agency by locking down defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa, solidifying their interior defense. But just days later, they took a big hit when veteran leader DeMarcus Lawrence packed his bags for the Seattle Seahawks. His departure leaves a major hole in leadership, even though the Cowboys still have big names like Micah Parsons, Odighizuwa, and DaRon Bland.

Parsons, already the loudest voice on defense, is stepping into an even bigger leadership role. But Dallas knew they needed more veteran presence—especially at linebacker, where they’re pretty thin. With only Marist Liufau and DeMarvion Overshown returning, they made a key move by trading for Kenneth Murray Jr.

Murray knows exactly what his job is with the Cowboys: keeping the defense in check. Comparing himself to a “traffic cop,” he explained, “I’ll be out there making sure everyone’s lined up, calling out what’s coming, and keeping us in the right play.” It’s a role he played in Tennessee, and he plans to do the same in Dallas.

Murray had a solid season with the Titans last year, racking up 95 tackles and 3.5 sacks in 14 games. With Eric Kendricks taking on most of the leadership duties last season—and Overshown dealing with a season-ending injury—Murray’s experience should bring some much-needed stability to the middle of the defense.

Adjusting to a new team, new coordinator, and some big personalities won’t be easy, but Murray’s skillset should make an immediate impact. Whether he’s directing traffic on the field or helping shape the locker room culture, the Cowboys are counting on him to step up.
