Patriots Trade Joe Milton III to Cowboys for Draft Pick
Joe Milton III is packing his bags for Dallas. The Patriots have traded the young quarterback and a seventh-round pick to the Cowboys in exchange for a fifth-round selection.
This move had been coming for a while. With New England drafting Drake Maye third overall and signing veteran Josh Dobbs, Milton saw the writing on the wall his chances of starting were slim. He wanted a fresh opportunity, and now he’ll be backing up Dak Prescott in Dallas.
Milton, a 2024 sixth-round pick, had been the Patriots’ third-string QB last season. But when he finally got his shot in Week 18, he made the most of it, leading New England to an upset win over Buffalo. That performance may have cost the Patriots the No. 1 overall draft pick, but it showed Milton’s potential.
Patriots coach Mike Vrabel acknowledged Milton’s hard work and readiness, saying the young QB “did everything they asked him to do” and was prepared when his chance came. Now, the Patriots move forward with Maye and Dobbs, and they may add another quarterback before the season starts.
For Milton, Dallas offers a new start and, perhaps, a better path to playing time.
