New Heat Incoming: Griffin Stieg Joins Bama’s Mound Mafia

🚨 Griffin Stieg Is Headed to Bama – But There’s a Twist

Griffin Stieg, a right-handed pitcher who used to throw for Virginia Tech, is packing his bags for Tuscaloosa. Yep, he’s officially transferring to Alabama. How do we know? The man updated his Instagram bio with Bama’s team handle — that’s today’s version of signing the papers.

Stieg didn’t pitch at all in 2025 — he’s been recovering from a UCL tear that required surgery last summer. But in 2024, he was on the mound often, making 13 starts and rocking a 4.70 ERA. Not elite, but solid. And definitely the kind of experience Alabama’s looking for.

This makes him the sixth new pitcher (and third starter) Bama’s pulled from the transfer portal — and the second to come from a Power Four school. Clearly, the Tide is stacking up arms, especially with MLB Draft shake-ups coming and ace Riley Quick likely heading out.

Back to Stieg: he’s thrown 72 career strikeouts and walked just 28 batters. He gave up six homers across 227 hitters in 2024 — not too shabby. In 2023, he was mostly a bullpen guy, logging just under 19 innings with one start, and a rougher 6.75 ERA. But by the next season, he nearly tripled his workload and found a groove.

There’s one big unknown, though: Stieg’s 21, which makes him draft-eligible. If an MLB team likes what it sees, he could go pro this month and skip college ball entirely next spring. Still, if he does stick around, he brings starting experience to a revamped Tide rotation that’s been heavy on relievers until now.

Between Stieg, Texas Tech transfer Tyler Boudreau, and Winthrop’s Owen Sarna, Alabama is clearly beefing up its starting options. Whether they’re weekend stars or just depth, expect all three to play a role next season — if the pros don’t scoop them up first.
