Brashard Smith Could Bring Some Much-Needed Juice to the Patriots’ Offense
The Patriots’ running back group didn’t really live up to expectations last season. Sure, the offensive line didn’t help, but the backs themselves didn’t exactly shine either especially in the passing game. Between Stevenson, Gibson, and Hasty, they only racked up 66 catches total. That’s way behind what we’re used to seeing from guys like James White or Shane Vereen in the past.
Enter SMU’s Brashard Smith.
He’s a unique player originally a wide receiver, he fully transitioned to running back last season and went off. In 2024, he racked up over 1,300 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns, plus added 327 receiving yards and four more scores. He also brings a ton of value on special teams as a kick returner.
Smith’s biggest strength is his versatility. He’s fast (4.39 in the 40), explosive, and knows how to run routes like a receiver, making him a mismatch nightmare against linebackers. He’s also not afraid of contact and can slip out of tackles thanks to his balance and agility.
But he’s still raw. He’s only been a full-time RB for one season and is still learning the finer points of the position. His vision isn’t always sharp, and he needs to work on his pass protection he’s on the smaller side and won’t get away with poor technique in the NFL.
If the Patriots pick him up, he’d likely be a pass-catching option on third downs or in hurry-up situations someone who can be moved all over the field. He could take some pressure off the current backs and give the offense more flexibility.
Bottom line: He’s not a finished product, but he’s got a ton of upside. If New England wants a playmaker who brings something different to the table, Smith’s worth a serious look on Day 3 of the draft.
